I've noticed that when my boss uses Toad for SQL Server and he wants to generate a string field with in essense an infinite length, that it generates it using the data type text. Here's an example of a very simple table, where the field name Comments illustrates what I'm talking about:

CREATE TABLE SomeTable ( Id Int IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL, Comments text NULL, CONSTRAINT IX_Id PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED ( Id ASC ) )

The data type VARCHAR(MAX) (or NVARCHAR(MAX)) is favored over the older data type text (or ntext). Is there a way of making Toad for SQL Server generate VARCHAR(MAX)/NVARCHAR(MAX) when generating the code that it does to create/modify a table?

Anybody know if this bug has been fixed?   It was posted in August of 2016 and I do not see a resolution yet.

https://support.software.dell.com/kb/210371

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Title

Alter View window can cause table locking

  • Description

    In the background, when doing an Alter View or Alter View as Script, Toad executes the following to get information about the table in a view

    USE [YourDB];

    BEGIN TRANSACTION;
    SET FMTONLY ON;
    SELECT * FROM tablename
    COMMIT TRANSACTION;
    SET FMTONLY OFF;

    The problem is that a COMMIT TRAN is issued in between the SET FMTONLY ON and OFF which means it will never be actually run. The COMMIT should be after the SET FMTONLY OFF command. This can cause long term blocking.

  • Resolution

    WORKAROUND

    none

    STATUS

    Waiting for fix in a future release of Toad for SQL Server

1) Adding a new procedure requires disconnect and reconnect before appearing in Object Explorer.

  1. Open Toad and connect to an instance containing a version-controlled database. Expand Programmability | Stored Procedure folder in Object Explorer within a version-controlled database in the connected instance. Right-click on the Stored Procedure folder and select Version Control | Show Perspective
  2. Using SSMS, create a stored procedure in that database.
  3. In Toad, right-click on the Stored Procedure folder in Object Explorer and select Version Control | Update Status.
  4. Right-click on the Stored Procedure folder in Object Explorer and select Refresh Item.
  5. In the Perspectives tab, click on Refresh.
  6. Note that the new procedure does not appear in either Object Explorer or the Perspectives tab.
  7. You have to disconnect from the instance and reconnect before the new procedure will appear in Object Explorer.

2) Objects in the database but not in the repository (status = Untracked) do not appear in the Perspectives tab:

  1. Find the new stored procedure in Object Explorer and hover over its name. Note that the new stored procedure has a status of Untracked
  2. Right-click on the Stored Procedure folder and select Version Control | Show Perspective. Note that there is no Untracked section and that the new stored procedure does not appear anywhere within the Perspectives tab.
  3. Click on the filter icon in the Status selector and select (Custom). Filter on Status equals Untracked and click OK. All objects disappear from the Perspectives tab.

In Toad 6.7, is there a way to get rid of the prefix 'Editor ' in the tab caption and have it display just the file name? The tabs are very long and I usually have a lot of files open and I can see only up to 3 at the time. And no, getting a bigger monitor is not an option.

Also, the Windows dialog (Window->Windows...) - can you please, please, please, display the full text for each tab and remove any elipsis (...) string? There is plenty of space - that's the whole purpose of the Windows dialog, don't you think? The window that is displayed when I press CTRL+Tab suffers from the same affliction. I cannot see the full names of the files. Again, get rid of the preview or make it an option and show the full names.

The triangle button (pointing down) on the top right (besides the connection button) is supposed to display a list of tabs when I click on it. Most of the time, instead of displaying the tabs list, it shows the context menu. Can you please, please, please fix this?? It is annoying as hell.

Another annoying thing, I use a lot Shift+F4 to display information about a table or view or stored procedure. Shift+F4 doesn't work for code in the Object Details. Why??

The Object Explorer window sometimes doesn't remember an active filter I set for, let's say, procedures, when I leave that section of the tree and come back to it. In this case resetting the filter doesn't have any effect by selecting None in the dropdown menu. I have to go back and forth between different sections (tables, views) and eventually it appears back. Very annoying.

Also, in the Object Explorer when I right-click and choose View Details, an empty tab appears in the Object Details window. I have to move to another object and then come back to this one to make it display the details of the object I originally selected.

In all honesty, I was hoping you re-write this tool in Delphi. I don't want to be negative, and I don't want to bash the tool, I think you guys are hard working but when I have so much work to do and the little things don't work properly it's very frustrating.

Your last release was in May. I was hoping you have another release where you fix all these annoying bugs but I can only hear the crickets. I noticed that toad for Oracle had more releases since May which I find interesting.

In this sql server tutorial video in the Sven Aelterman's SQL Review series, the focus is on writing queries in the real-world. A significant portion of the video is spent on step-by-step solution development for a complex query in the AdventureWorks2012 sample database. I'm looking at TOAD for SQL Server as a replacement for SSMS, but it appears as thought there is some functionality missing in TSS.  Specifically the commands and management options for supporting and administrating my AlwaysOn cluster in SQL 2012?  Is this true or am I missing it from somewhere or do I have to turn it on some how?

I'm currently using TOAD for SQL Server 6.6 Xpert edition.  Any info would be helpful.

Hello.  We are ramping up an evaluation period for migrating Oracle databases to SQL Server.  We are big time TOAD users for Oracle, and I have a group of non-admin power users who will definitely need a tool for a front end.  For now, I would like a freeware copy or a trial version to allow me to justify purchase.  I found an older copy of freeware, V6.6, but it doesn't support Windows 10.  It might still work.  When I look at what is available for me to evaluate, it's overwhelming!   I also notice that the trial version  is for 30 days, which definitely will not be enough time.  I

I'd appreciate some insight into what product I should be looking at, and experiences from Oracle to SQL Server that might help.

We are using SQL Server 2016 for this project.

Editing tables data and the concurrency violation error

Hi:

I sometimes need to change data manually. I double-click on the table, I navigate to the Data tab in the Object Details window, I find the record, then I attempt to modify the record, but as soon as move off the record I invariably get the message: Concurrency Violation. Expected to update 1 row(s), but actually updated 0 row(s).

My question is this. All my tables have primary keys. Why isn't Toad able to figure out automatically the update statement it has to run to update the record? Yes, if I configure the update/delete/insert statements by selecting the Define Custom Editing option it works, but why do I have to do that, since all the information needed to infer the three statements is there already.

Is there an option to tell Toad to do it automatically?

Thanks
