Running Toad for Oracle in a 64 bit environment

Running Toad for Oracle in a 64 bit environment is really pretty easy and straight-forward, you just have to follow the installation instructions and verify your environment is setup properly.
I have created a short Power Point that shows the steps you need to follow. These instructions come directly from the installation guide as well.

I hope this helps you with your installation.

Common Uses and Features in Toad Data Modeler

Recently there have been a lot of questions on some of the features of Toad Data Modeler which are part of the basic components of the tool but for whatever reason people seem to have a bit of trouble figuring them out.

In the past I have published some papers on a couple of these features on Toad World and I will provide links to them at the bottom of this blog.

One of the best and easiest ways to find the features available in the tool is to use HELP. You can press your F1 key at any time and get help on the current page, or you can go to the HELP menu item and access all of the information about the tool. You can also right-click on the current screen/object you are working on and get help and options for that object. We have really tried to make this tool easy to use and provide you with the information and features you need right at your fingertips.

The most recent questions that have come up seem to be around the formatting of your diagrams:

Can I create sub-models?

Can I color code the different objects in my model/sub-model?

Can I control the formatting of the relationship lines in my model?

Well, the answer to all of these questions is YES!

In Toad Data Modeler we call sub-models ‘Workspaces’. Using a workspace you can organize your data model into ‘logical’ pieces that will contain the subset of tables that you are interested in working on. You can view my Toad World paper on this by clicking here: Creating workspaces in Toad Data Modeler

In Toad Data Modeler you can color code your Workspaces. You can change the background colors, objects colors – including making the object heading a contrasting color to the object body. You can view my Toad World paper on this by clicking here: Color-coding Entities in Toad Data Modeler

And yes, you can format the relationship line text in your model. You can do this several ways.

If you want to change the font size/color/shape simply right-click on the relationship and choose ‘Format’.

If you want to hide or remove the text that describes the relationship go to OBJECTS | FORMAT | Workspace Format and uncheck Display Line Names. Doing this will affect the complete model.

If you just want to remove the text box for one or two of the relationship lines and not the complete model simply right-click on the text box, choose EDIT, and in the Name field just enter a blank space. This will keep the line for this relationship but delete the text.

I hope you find this information helpful and if you need more help or have comments/suggestions I invite you to post your thoughts on the Toad Data Modeler Forum.
