Toad 9.7 Already Taking Form

Location: Blogs Bert Scalzo's Blog

I know – Toad 9.6 was just released this week – on Aprils Fool’s day no less. But we’ve already been hard at work on the next release (and the beta should start in a few weeks).

In last week’s blog, I asked you guys - our customers - to submit ideas for what should be added in Toad 9.7, because as we’ve always said, “Toad is your product, thus you should drive it.” So far though (and to my great disappointment), no one has commented. So I’m going to “prime the pump” by leaking some things prior to the first 9.7 beta, to hopefully stimulate you guys to chime in – and help us to drive Toad to where you want it to go.

So here’s a sneak preview of two up-coming Toad 9.7 features. Plus if you don’t want to comment publicly about what you’d like next in Toad – then please email me privately at bert.scalzo@quest.com. I welcome all comments, suggestions, or ideas – so write me!!!

The “Database Browser” continues to evolve – quickly becoming the DBA’s best friend. Look at the screen snapshot below. In the past, the instance specific DBA functionalities had nowhere to “plug-in”, so they were placed on the Main Menu under Database – with the following sub-menus: Administer, Diagnose, Monitor, Optimize, Report, et al. That’s simply too much navigation for most. So now all relevant instance specific functionalities are exposed as “right-hand-mouse” options in the Database Browser.

Remember, Toad’s fundamental mantra is “To simplify and enhance productivity when doing all things Oracle”. In other words, we strive to make Oracle easier to use and thus improve your experience and/or success. Probably the most complex task facing DBA’s and developers is utilizing Oracle’s “Extended Trace” facility to instrument their codes’ execution – and then to decipher those results. Toad had the ability to trace sessions via the “Session Browser”, and now we’ve added the ability to drill into those results. Look at the following couple of screen snapshots to excite your senses. So if you’re a fan of the Hotsos “Method-R” optimization approach – Toad is now (as hopefully always) your tool of choice.

As the minister says in a wedding ceremony “Speak now or forever hold your peace”.

The Toad 9.7 beta will be starting soon enough – now is the time to provide feedback …

I cannot find a key combination to jump between tabs in Toad... for instance if I have many SQL style tabs open. So if that doesn't exist yet, I'd like to ask you guys to add something like this.

Sandra, if you're speaking of the Editor tabs, try Alt+PageUp/PageDown.

Otherwise Ctrl+Tab works between Toad windows.

That's a good question - because the exact same question was asked recently on the Toad yahoo group:

That's why it's advisable to join the Toad yahoo group - there so much in Toad now that sharing info like this among peers is a great forum.

This is still an issue for me on a daily basis, and I know lots of developers here (and in previous places I've worked) are using MOE and having to do this kind of substitution on a daily basis...and I did say I'd wait at least a year before asking again...
