Really Cool 'TOAD-Like' Freeware

We all love TOAD – both the commercial and freeware versions. We love it because it’s simply the best Oracle productivity enhancing tool out there. A few weeks back, I mentioned the many other freeware offerings from Quest. So this week I thought I’d mention a few other freeware offerings that serve me nearly as much as TOAD – just in different functional areas. Here are my top five:
  1. 7Zip (www.7zip.org) – hands down the best zip utility I’ve ever used. The GUI is not as fancy as say WinRAR, but there are others who offer optional GUI’s to this utility. What’s nice about 7Zip is that it squeezes big files down about 10% more than RAR and 20% more than ZIP formats. When you are zipping up a virtual machine – this utility will produce the smallest file.

  2. CCLeaner (www.ccleaner.com) – a handy PC de-crapifier (their words – not mine). This handy little utility will erase the plethora of garbage files that accumulate on your PC as you run apps such as Firefox or Internet Explorer. You can fully customize how “aggressive” the file cleaning behavior is. And it offers a handy and reliable registry cleaner.

  3. Revo Uninstaller (www.revouninstaller.com) – hands down the best Windows software uninstall utility there is. If you use just the Windows tool to add/drop software, the individual programs’ uninstallers may leave junk behind – and sometimes tons of it (e.g. directories, files, system DLL’s and registry entries). Revo Uninstaller offers the option to do a “super robust” uninstall – where it examines the software and cleans up any stuff their uninstall forgot or left behind.

  4. FileZilla (www.filezilla.org) – I know that TOAD offers an FTP utility. But sometimes I’m working on my netbook where I don’t really do Oracle/TOAD type work – and I need to download some files or upload revisions to my web site. I used to pay for CuteFTP – until I found this freebie.

  5. SyncBack (www.2brightsparks.com) – My favorite tool for keeping my Notebook, Netbook and Desktop PC files in sync. Also useful for making daily backups to either a USB disk or flash disk.

2 thumbs-up on the FileZilla. When i'm downloading a multi-gigabyte VMware image and it times out, being able to start the download where I left off with a simple 'resume' button is so nice.
